Welcome to my site! My name is Megan, I am a nursing student at the University of Iowa College of Nursing. This website is the product of my honors project that I have been working on for the past nine months. I made this site to help those with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) have a way to become more active.
My passion for working with people with IDD started in high school when I had the opportunity to intern in our classroom for students with disabilities. We would spend time helping our peers with disabilities in their classes or volunteering in the community. This experience has held a very special place in my heart ever since.
After moving to college, I was hired as a coach for Iowa City's Special Olympics team. I coached several sports including basketball, tennis, soccer, volleyball, and many more. Coaching people with IDD in the community reminded me of my experience in high school and how rewarding it was.
During the height of quarantine, starting in the summer of 2020, I turned to physical activity as a way to relieve stress and take mental breaks. I felt much more energized and healthier overall. Personally experiencing the benefits of daily physical activity inspired me to create this project.
I hope that this website can serve as a place for students and teachers to turn to when they feel that they need a short 10-minute break. Ideally, incorporating three of these physical activity breaks each day would help students achieve the recommended 30 minutes of daily exercise.
